Steven Anderson is Professor and Dean Emeritus in the School of Social Work at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), where he also earned BSW and MSW degrees. He holds MA and PhD degrees in political science from the University of Michigan, with specializations in public policy and American government. Before entering academia, he was Associate Director for Human Services for the Michigan House Fiscal Agency, where he functioned as staff leader on the development and monitoring of state human service agency budgets for the Michigan House of Representatives.
Dr. Anderson’s research centers on factors associated with access to benefits by low-income families, and how innovative policy and program strategies can improve access and well-being. His book on these issues, New Strategies for Social Innovation: Market-Based Approaches for Assisting the Poor (Columbia University Press) assessed a range of innovative social program models and more broadly evaluated the relative merits of and relationships between private and governmental supports for poor people. His work has been published extensively in leading social work and social policy journals, and he has led many funded research projects evaluating welfare reforms as well as other social welfare programs. Professor Anderson has taught social policy, program planning and development, leadership and social change, social entrepreneurship, and research methods courses for undergraduate, MSW, and PhD students.
