Karen Bensen is the Coordinator of Dual Degree Programs and Associate Professor of the Practice at the Graduate School of Social Work (GSSW) at the University of Denver. She provides leadership in the areas of innovative degree collaborations with other DU graduate programs and academic advising for dual degree students. She earned her Master of Social Work in 1991 from GSSW and returned there in 2008 to teach and serve as the Director of Student Services and then Assistant Dean of Community Academic Programs before taking her current role. Prior to joining the faculty at GSSW, she served as director of the University of Denver’s Partners in Learning Program, where she created numerous opportunities for students to engage with faculty outside the classroom. Prior to that, she was the director of GLBT Student Services at three post-secondary educational institutions on Denver's Auraria campus. She has a passion for social justice and leads a course to South Africa each fall studying social work and social justice in the context of post-Apartheid South Africa. More recently, Karen helped start and lead an affinity group for peers in the clinical and professor or the practice faculty line at the University of Denver’s Graduate School of Social Work.
