My name is Marie Krebs (she/her). I was born in Colorado Springs but have lived in Iowa City most of my life. I am a mother of 3 boys and a grandmother to one grandson. I have a bachelor's degree in business administration and am currently working on my Master of Social Work at the University of Iowa. Returning to school in my mid forties was driven by the absolute lack of BIPOC therapists in my area despite the need for services after several hundred years of forced trauma on our communities. I am the managing director for Great Plains Action Society, an Indigenous founded and led grassroots organization focusing on Indigenous concerns such as our MMIR and climate crises. I joined the Multicultural School of Social Work Association in order to stand up to anti-ADEI legislation being implemented in my state of Iowa. I have served as a commissioner on the Iowa City Ad Hoc Truth and Reconciliation Commission. I would like to see society move away from its exploitative, extraction culture to a compassionate society that values all life. My passion is to promote healing within our communities. Health, rest, and joy are all forms of resistance. I'm lucky to have a supportive community of people who help keep me grounded and laughing. I rejuvenate through dancing, music, nature, cooking, and connections in my community.
