Dr. Mataira earned his doctoral degree in social policy and social work from Massey University, Auckland, New Zealand. He is of Maori descent and has lived and worked in Hawaii since 2002. Dr. Mataira has published in areas of indigenous health and well-being, entrepreneurship and economic development, Indigenous research methodologies, and decolonizing social work education. His clinical and community work experiences are in adult mental and substance abuse, rural health, and working with men. Dr. Mataira is the co-PI on a NIH AIM-AHEAD PAIR grant focused on AI/ML modelling and health equity research among Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islanders, and other Indigenous populations. He is interested in leveraging the potential of AI/ML to accelerate health and biomedical innovation while prioritizing and addressing health disparities and the complex drivers of inequity, exclusion, and silencing prevalent in science and academic institutions. Dr. Mataira is committed also to enhancing the participation and representation of Indigenous researchers in AI/ML health equity research and in the active (re)empowering of local communities.
