December Maxwell is an assistant professor at the Anne and Henry Zarrow School of Social Work at the University of Oklahoma (Tulsa Campus). Dr. Maxwell’s qualitative research uses community-developed and derived decolonizing approaches, including talk-story and story inquiry, to better understand the complex interactions of historic and generational trauma, Indigenous motherhood, and perinatal mental health disparities among diverse groups of mothers. Her recent projects include examination of experiences of becoming a mother among the Keetoowah and Keetoowah elders, a study of the impacts of COVID-19 on the transition of becoming a mother and amplification of maternal mental health disparities, a study evaluating the intersections of historical trauma and birthing environment on maternal mental health outcomes, and a community-based evaluation of functionality and improvement of street medicine in Hawai'i.
