Assistant Professor
University of Montana School of Social Work
Polson, MT, United States
Co Carew serves as an Assistant Professor at the University of Montana (UM) in the School of Social Work. Carew has been at UM for four years after spending twenty-three years working at the Salish Kootenai College (SKC), which is located on the Flathead Indian Reservation. Carew worked as the Department Chair and, with an Indigenous faculty, developed a Bachelor's in Social Work, which is accredited by the Council in Social Work Education (CSWE). Out of the 35 Tribal Colleges in the US, SKC is the only tribal college that offers an accredited BSW program. Co is an Indigenous woman and feels privileged to work in an academic space where she can examine and articulate an Indigenous way of knowing through direct experience, readings, course activities, assignments, discussions, and presentations by Native scholars. Carew holds a PhD in Expressive Arts Therapy from Lesley University. She attained a BSW from UM and an MSW from Denver University. Her passion is to create a soft landing as one navigates trauma through arts-based healing practices.
