Postdoctoral Fellow
University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work, United States
Priscilla Kennedy is a postdoctoral fellow in the Graduate College of Social Work at the University of Houston. She received an MSW from the University of Houston, with a specialization in political social work; an MS from the University of Houston in occupational technology, with a specialization in training and organization development; and a BA in journalism from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Priscilla’s research agenda is informed by her years in community social work, specifically in community health improvement and the development of interventions that address structural determinants of health. She is particularly interested in examining conceptual frameworks for social work education that integrate critical, engaged, and abolitionist pedagogies to cultivate students’ knowledge of structural racism and their agency to act on dismantling oppressive structural forces. Her dissertation explores the lived experiences of social work students who participated in a course that focused on structural racism as it is manifested in the system of mass incarceration. As a white female, Priscilla has benefitted over the course of her social work education and career from the mentorship of several Black women who have given her guidance and grace through her ongoing journey of examining how positionality, power, and privilege of white social workers impact their ability to work effectively within oppressive systems.
