Houston, TX, United States
Alexandra Hood is a Ph.D. student in the Graduate College of Social Work at the University of Houston. She holds a Master of Social Work degree from Metropolitan State University of Denver and two bachelor’s degrees from the University of Colorado Colorado Springs. Her program of research centers on Black girls comprised of three interconnected domains: (1) adultification, (2) identity development, and (3) multi-youth-serving systems. The overarching aim of her research program is to enhance the empowerment and positive identity development of Black girl and iluminate their unique strengths and supports. As a first-generation, mixed-race researcher who grew up in primarily White spaces where her own history and experiences were often lacking from my education, it has become critical for her to engage in research with a focus on marginalized populations to contribute to dismantling systemic racial injustices and fostering social equity. Her research is guided by the critical theoretical perspectives of Black Feminist Thought (BFT), Black Girlhood, Critical Race Feminism (CRF), and Intersectionality. Her research journey integrates theory with practice, shaping her past and current projects while laying the groundwork for future endeavors. This commitment extends to her teaching, where she integrates research insights to raise awareness and advocate for racial justice and equity.
