Laurie Cook Heffron, PhD, LMSW, is Associate Professor and Social Work Program Director at St. Edward’s University in Austin, Texas. Her research focuses on intimate partner and sexual violence, migration, and impacts on refugees, asylum-seekers, trafficked persons, and detained immigrants, and she teaches courses related to meso and macro-level practice, policy advocacy, and human behavior in the social environment. Dr. Cook Heffron’s research and teaching are informed by her social work practice with refugees, asylum-seekers, trafficked persons, and detained immigrants. As a social worker licensed in Texas, Laurie regularly provides assessments and serves as an expert in asylum cases, T visas, and U visas. Laurie completed an undergraduate degree from Georgetown University and graduate work at the University of Texas at Austin.
