Dr. Mary Ohmer is an Associate Professor and Chair of the Community, Organization, and Social Action specialization at the University of Pittsburgh School of Social Work. Dr. Ohmer received her Ph.D. with distinction and her MSW and MPIA from the University of Pittsburgh, and BSW from Gannon University in Erie, PA. She has over 30 years of experience in community organizing and development and over 15 years in community-engaged research. Dr. Ohmer is on the board of the Association for Community Organization and Social Action and has leadership roles in the Society for Social Work and Research in Community and Neighborhood Research. She is the Academic Co-Lead for the Policy and Place Committee for The Pittsburgh Study (UPMC, Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh), and is on the Internal Advisory Council for Pitt’s Community Engagement Center Initiative. She is also the lead author of Measures for Community and Neighborhood Research, the first book of its kind to compile and synthesize measures for community research. In addition, she was on the leadership team and a contributing author to the CSWE’s Specialized Practice Curricular Guide for Macro Social Work Practice. Dr. Ohmer is currently conducting community based participatory intervention research projects in several neighborhoods in Pittsburgh. Two projects are focused on preventing violence and promoting community wellbeing, and a third project focuses on increasing resident civic engagement to influence equity and equitable development. These projects engage youth and adults and are in collaboration with community partners.
