Portland State University
Portland, OR, United States
Julie Kates, LCSW, Associate Professor of Practice is the Director of Practicum Education at the Portland State University School of Social Work. She earned her BA in English and Women’s Studies from Oberlin College in 1991 and her MSW from PSU in 1995. Julie’s community based practice experience focused on clinical work with children and families impacted by and involved with the foster care system. She developed and managed programs aimed at supporting children and youth to remain in their homes and communities. Julie joined the field education program at PSU in 2007 and has been involved in placing over 700 students each year in the BSW, MSW campus and online programs. She has helped to develop the MSW practicum seminar course and an advanced standing practicum seminar and provides training to faculty liaisons, practicum instructors, site supervisors, and other practicum directors each year. She is passionate about ethically driven, competency based social work practicum education that supports students to gain the knowledge and skills they need to practice effectively. During the past 8 years, under Julie's leadership, the Practicum Education Program at PSU has critically reflected on the ways that policies and procedures can further perpetuate racism and white supremacy in social work practice and has developed an evolving program focused on centering racial equity and social justice in practicum education. Julie currently serves on the Council on Field Education (COFE) and is the President of the North American Network of Field Educators and Directors (NANFED).
