Session: Mental Health From Immigration Context: Attitudes and Experiences

A Mixed-Method Study on Perception of Mental Illness and Help-Seeking Attitudes Among Resettled Burmese

The current study examines the factors influencing mental health help-seeking attitudes among resettled Burmese in the US. Findings revealed that negative beliefs about mental illness and self-stigma were significant predictors of psychological help-seeking attitudes. The presenter/s will discuss practice implications for combating cultural barriers and misconceptions of mental illness.

Learning Objectives:

  1. • Participants will learn about some predictive factors of mental health help-seeking attitudes among the study population.
  2. • Participants will learn about some of the barriers that may hinder professional help-seeking
  3. • The participants will learn about some effective intervention strategies to combat cultural barriers, negative stereotypes, and misconceptions about mental illness
