ADEI and Cultural Competence in Social Work Education: Strategies for Adapting to Evolving Laws

Societal shifts and legislative changes continuously influence social work education, notably in Texas, where recent laws impact teaching culturally competent practices and ADEI directives. This presentation examines innovative pedagogical strategies amid evolving legislation, emphasizing the need to maintain these crucial components in preparing future social workers.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understanding the Legislative Landscape: The session will begin by providing an overview of Texas's recent laws and legislations that may impact teaching culturally competent practices and infusing ADEI throughout the curriculum. This includes analyzing how these legal changes intersect with social work education and associated ethical considerations.
  2. Examining Cultural Competence and ADEI in Explicit and Implicit Curriculum: Participants will discuss adapting the curriculum to new legislation and integrating cultural competence, anti-racism, anti-oppression, and advocacy into course content and field experiences.
  3. Fostering and Modeling Inclusive Learning Environments Explore strategies for creating inclusive, equitable, and culturally responsive learning environments. This includes addressing potential challenges in the classroom, promoting open dialogues around cultural differences, and incorporating diverse perspectives into teaching materials.
