Re-Envisioning African American Parent Engagement and Involvement in School Settings

Promoting parental engagement and involvement is critical to closing the racial academic achievement gap. This paper explores African American single parents’ definitions of parental engagement and involvement in their children’s school communities.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand ways in which African American single parents conceptualize parental engagement.
  2. Identify effective approaches and best practices to engage African American parents of elementary and middle school aged youth.
  3. Discuss challenges and effective strategies to engage MSW students in conversations to increase competence in addressing issues of social justice, diversity, and equity in school settings.
