As students, Black, indigenous, people of color (BIPOC) experience the vestiges of colonialism throughout higher education, including in Social Work. Compassionate Pedagogy is one way to challenge and change the pervasiveness of colonized educational practices in academia. We will explore ways to implement Compassionate Pedagogy in the classroom.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand more clearly how higher education is steeped in colonized educational practices and is harmful to all students
  2. Identify colonized styles of pedagogy and create a teaching style that honors all students, especially Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC), and their talents and ways of knowing.
  3. Implement compassionate pedagogy strategies that contribute to the decolonization of the higher education classroom.
