Anayeli Lopez, PhD, MSW, is an Assistant Professor in the School of Social Work at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, NM. Dr. Lopez received dual Ph.D. degrees in Social Welfare from Boston College and ITESO-Jesuit University of Guadalajara in 2019. She received a Fellowship in International Social Welfare at Boston College-ITESO during her doctoral studies.
Dr. Lopez's research is characterized by its comprehensive approach, utilizing a range of qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-methods methodologies. Her work focuses on service access and culturally responsive and trauma-informed social work practices, particularly with Latinx immigrant families and children. She has also demonstrated a commitment to using culturally responsive approaches, including community-based participatory and ethnographic research, with marginalized communities.
She had the opportunity to complete research and evaluation projects with schools, universities, and community agencies such as the Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service, the McGovernDole International Food for Education, and the Child Nutrition Program in Honduras.
Most recently, she was the co-investigator leading a research project funded by the W. K. Kellogg Foundation in the border region. It aimed to 1). The accessibility and quality of their services for immigrant families with young children; 2.) Identify barriers and facilitators for immigrant families accessing services; and 3.) Develop community-based policy and practice solutions to improve support for immigrant families with young children in the New Mexico borderlands and throughout the state.
