Cynthia George is an Associate Professor of Social Work at Tennessee State University. They teach courses on research and public policy. They are an award-winning artist, educator, and evaluator with twenty years of experience working with groups from across the USA to engage in prevention science in areas including substance abuse, healthy relationships, teen driver safety, inclusion of people with disabilities, and crime prevention. They earned a Bachelor’s of Science in Sociology from Tennessee Technological University, a Master’s of Science in Social Work from the University of Tennessee, and a Doctorate of Philosophy in Social Work from Virginia Commonwealth University. Dr. Cyn is a first-generation college student from a low income family and a person who manages disabilities. Performing as Dr. CynCorrigible, they also write lyrics and sing for the punk band Graduates Rise. They have performed at academic events including the 2017 Working Class Studies Association Conference, the 2018 Association of Social and Behavioral Scientists Conference, and the 2018 United Campus Workers Statewide Convention; and for advocacy events like Nashville’s 2019 Bianca Page Day and Women’s March. They received an International Safety Media Award at the World Health Organization’s 2022 World Safety Conference for their edutainment campaign integrating punk music and social work theory titled “What if we all focused on Membership?? A Social Work Tutorial on Dr. Hans Falck’s Membership Perspective in the age of COVID, featuring Quarantine Not Quarantined by Graduates Rise.” Graduates Rise is working on their second full length album titled Canary.
