Michelle O'Kane is a PhD Candidate at the University of British Columbia, the Research Co-ordinator for the UBC Centre for the Study of Services to Children and Families (Vancouver campus) and a Registered Social Worker. She brings nearly two decades of frontline practice experience as child welfare social worker and manager across three countries to her research and teaching, with a specialisation in the perinatal period and early years. Her research interests are child welfare and systems transformation; children in public space; neglect; poverty and class; environmental justice; and teaching and learning in social work programs. Her PhD addresses the conceptualisation, identification and community impact of supervisory neglect as a child protection classification.
