Dr. Lisa Byers, ᏣᎳᎩ, ᏥᏍᏆ ᏧᏂᏴᏫ (Cherokee, Bird Clan) is an Associate Professor of Social Work and Affiliate Faculty with Native American Studies at the University of Oklahoma. Dr. Byers coordinates the Graduate Certificate in Social Work with American Indians that she created. Her favorite course to teach is American Indian Behavioral Health because it provides a safe space for students and herself to be authentic in academia. She affirms Indigenous orientations to wellness that include the American concept of behavioral health. She utilizes Indigenous Standpoint Theory and the Natural Democracy Ethos to support healing for ancestors, children, future generations, and herself.
