Travis R. Scheadler, MSW, MS, LSW, is a PhD candidate whose research focuses on the interconnections between activism, mental and physical health, community connectedness, and identity development among LGBTQ+ people, athletes, and coaches. His research aims to (a) empower individuals to engage in the community and (b) amplify protective factors that prevent suicidality and promote joy and resilience. In his dissertation, An Examination of LGBTQ+ Focused Community Sport, Travis conducts a scoping review and uses structural equation modeling and thematic analysis to examine community connectedness and sociopolitical engagement as possible protective factors that boost the mental health of LGBTQ+ adults involved in Stonewall Sports. He has experience conducting quantitative research, qualitative research, and scoping reviews related to activism, gender and sexual minority health and identity development, and sport for social justice. To date, Travis has published 23 peer-reviewed articles, including eight first-authored papers, found in a variety of journals such as Journal of Homosexuality, Sociology of Sport, and Journal of Human Rights and Social Work. He also serves as the Junior Editor-in-Chief for the Journal for Advancing Sport Psychology in Research. In addition, Travis has taught numerous courses, such as Issues in Social Justice: Race, Gender & Sexuality at The Ohio State University, and Academic Orientation at University of Kentucky. His approach to teaching emphasizes social justice, empowerment, fun, and active learning experiences. Recently, he earned the Selma & Alexander W. Erlen Award for his excellence in research, teaching, and service. Travis is expected to graduate in May 2025.
