Dr. Suh Chen Hsiao joined the practicum education faculty in 2010. Professor Hsiao has over two decades of clinical, supervisory, and leadership experience in integrated/behavioral health settings, including community hospitals, county health and mental health facilities, home health and adult day health centers, and K-12 schools/higher education settings. Before joining LAUSD, the Taiwanese native worked for the LA County Department of Mental Health-Edelman Children's System of Care, providing individual, family, and group interventions, as well as serving as the LPS-designated mental health clinician to provide emergency mental health assessment and crisis interventions to group home high-risk youth. For ten years, she was the administrator with the Los Angeles Unified School District's School Mental Health unit under the Student Health & Human Service Division, training over 45 MSW interns from different universities, including UCLA, Cal State Universities of Long Beach, Dominguez Hills, and MFT/Art Therapist interns from Loyola Marymount University.
In addition to teaching and research, she is responsible for the operational aspects of Practicum Education activities and the initial arbiter of any issues pertaining to Practicum Education for both campus-based and virtual programs. She is the Principal Investigator for the HRSA Scholarship for Disadvantaged Students: Primary Care Project (2020-2025), focusing on enhancing the education of Master of Social Work students from disadvantaged backgrounds who are committed to working in primary care settings in medically underserved communities. Additionally, she created several global international social work collaborations and immersion programs with various universities in Asia.
