Dr. Colleen Fisher is Associate Professor and MSW Program Director at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She is a Sparkman Center for Global Health Scholar, Minority Health & Research Center Scientist, and a recent Fulbright Scholar (India, 2022). Dr. Fisher’s research focuses on health equity, both in the U.S. and in the Global South, and the social and structural factors that promote or hinder health and wellbeing among marginalized and vulnerable populations. Her methodological work explores the use of participatory, visual, and capacity-building evaluation approaches, and translation and dissemination of health disparity research findings to non-academic publics. Dr. Fisher’s recent research projects include evaluation of a community intervention to build resilience among youth exposed to violence in Zimbabwe, exploration of microfinance impacts on Indian women in extreme poverty, and a systematic review exploring the impact of short-term study abroad on university students’ global competencies.
