Since receiving her BSW at the University of Alabama, Cho Rong has accumulated diverse research experiences in the areas of gerontology, health disparities, mental health, behavioral health, and rurality among the minority population. For both BSW and MSW, she acquired international field placement experience in South Korea where generalist practice is prevalent. From these opportunities, she gained diverse practice experience from case management to program development and administration. Also, she worked with diverse populations, including children from low-income families, elders, multicultural families, children with intellectual disabilities, adults with schizophrenia, and North Korean defectors.
Applying these diverse perspectives, she is currently a doctoral student at the University of Alabama School of Social Work, MFP fellow, and consultant for the National Council for Mental Wellbeing, invited to provide expertise on adapting Mental Health First Aid (MHFA), a mental health awareness and education program for laypersons, for the Korean immigrant community in the US. Her dissertation aims to implement and evaluate the Korean version of the MHFA using a community-based participatory research approach and mixed methods design. It is being implemented to Korean immigrants residing in the southern US, where ethnic mental health resources are limited. Expected to graduate December 2024, she hopes to continue her effort nationwide in MHFA implementation to the Korean immigrant population. Furthermore, in the future, she aims to develop a community center that can advocate and support the complex resettlement needs of immigrant and refugee population residing in areas with limited ethnic resources.
