Angela Clavijo, LMSW is a Colombian immigrant and an Instructor of Social Work at Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas. She is a BSW graduate from the Lamar University Social Work Program and received her MSW from Our Lady of the Lake University. She worked in direct practice for 10 years prior to joining the faculty at Lamar and has experience in child and family welfare, health care, consultant services, and school social work. A current PhD candidate with the Worden School of Social Service at Our Lady of the Lake University, her research centers around exploring the experiences of cultural assimilation for the Hispanic and Latino community. Her other research interests include immigration as a social determinant of health, wellness and belonging among immigrant and refugee populations, adversity in early childhood in immigrant populations, advocacy and political action to address systemic inequalities and promote social justice for marginalized communities, the epigenetic inheritance of trauma and intergenerational healing, approaches to healing that emphasize holistic wellness and a return to indigenous knowledge and wisdom, yoga as a therapeutic tool, faith-based trauma and spiritual abuse, and using research as a method of storytelling and empowerment
