McLean earned her BS degree from Union University with a double major in psychology and sociology and her MSW from the University of Alabama. She is licensed as a Master Social Worker (LMSW) in Alabama and an Advanced Practice Social Worker in Tennessee (LAPSW). McLean is currently in the role of Instructor and Coordinator of Teaching Innovation with the University of Alabama School of Social Work, and she facilitates a creative writing workshop at Bibb County Correctional Facility as a volunteer for the Indiana Prison Writer’s Workshop (nonprofit).
As a faculty member at the University of Tennessee at Martin (2011 – 2022), McLean transitioned from lecturer to tenured Associate Professor and served one year as Interim Program Director for the Social Work Program. McLean also served as the Assessment Coordinator for the Social Work Program, faculty co-advisor for the SPECTRUM Student Organization (LGBTQ+ and Allies), faculty advisor for the Student Social Work Association, and a member of the University of Tennessee System’s IDE Strategic Action Team. Her scholarly interests include agency appearance policies, experiential learning, teaching online, and instructional technology. She served on the Association of Social Work Boards Passing Score Study Panel and as a board member for the Tennessee Conference on Social Welfare, WRAP of West Tennessee (a non-profit organization serving domestic violence and sexual assault survivors), and Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital – Delta Network (board president). Before her higher education experience, McLean’s professional experience included work in public health, corrections, schools, child abuse prevention, and homelessness.
