Mavis Smith, LCSW, Ph.D. Candidate is a 3rd-year student at Yeshiva University's Wurzweiler School of Social Welfare. She earned her B.S. in Politics, Economics, and Law from SUNY Old Westbury in 2010 and obtained her Master's Degree from New York University Silver School of Social Work in 2018. She has worked in various capacities as an Eviction Prevention Paralegal, Forensic Social Worker, Individual Psychotherapist, and Medical Social Worker. In 2017, she was awarded the Verne Lamarr Lyons scholarship by the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) for her work in Mental Health with the African-American Community. She aspires to complete her dissertation which focuses on Diabetes Mellitus I&II and mental health in the Caribbean- American community to effectuate positive change and promote culturally sensitive interventions.
