Dr. Lalaine (Lainey) Sevillano is an Assistant Professor in the School of Social Work at Portland State University. She is a Pilipinx immigrant and a first generation MotherScholar, educator, and relationship builder. Drawing from critical race and decoloniality theories, her scholarship advances the idea that adverse health outcomes and life trajectories may be linked to legacies of colonialism. Dr. Sevillano completed her doctoral studies from the University of Texas at Austin where she was awarded a 2021-22 University Continuing Graduate Student Fellowship. Her dissertation, “Resisting the New Yellow Peril: Internalized Racism and Critical Consciousness in Asian, Pacific Islander, Desi Americans” was awarded the 2022 API Social Work Educators Association's Doctoral scholarship. Most recently, Dr. Sevillano has been invited as a Fellow of the Indigenous Substance use and addictions Prevention Interdisciplinary Research Education (INSPIRE) program from the Indigenous Wellness Research Institute at the University of Washington.
