Melvin C. Cherry, Jr. is a Field Assistant Professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Social Work. He is an Ed.D. candidate at the University of Pittsburgh School of Education. He earned an MSW with a Home and School Visitor certification from the University of Pittsburgh School of Social Work and holds a BA in Mathematics from Saint Vincent College.
As a Field Assistant Professor, he is responsible for teaching and coordinating field experiences for both MSW and BASW students. He is the field coordinator for BASW students and also the field coordinator and academic advisor for MSW students. He coordinates field experience for students interested in Integrated Healthcare and mental Health, as well as Generalist placements for first-year MSW students.
Before joining the University of Pittsburgh School of Social Work, Melvin served as an Academic Retention Specialist for students on academic probation while advising the Facilitating Opportunity and Climate for Underrepresented Students (FOCUS) program at the University of Pittsburgh Dietrich School of Arts & Sciences. He has also held professional positions in case management, school-based prevention, school-based therapy, wraparound services, mobile therapy, and crisis management.
