Harassment and Discrimination at Social Work Academic Conferences: Results From a National Survey

We report on experiences of harassment and discrimination at social work academic conferences based on a national, online survey of academically-involved social workers (N=290). Findings identify patterns of harassment and discrimination based on identity characteristics, along with coping strategies employed by targets of these behaviors and recommendations for conference organizers.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe the prevalence and nature of experiences of harassment and discrimination among individuals attending social work academic conferences.
  2. Identify patterns of demographic differences among those experiencing harassment and discrimination versus those not.
  3. Demonstrate an understanding of the impact of harassment and discrimination on targets and their responses to these experiences, and identify recommendations to mitigate or eliminate harassment and discrimination in professional academic conference settings.
