Session: Supporting Transgender and NonBinary Community Members

Countering the Narrative: Highlighting Gender Euphoria in Trans/Nonbinary Communities Through Creative Writing

This study explores gender euphoric experiences of TNB people, that is, the joy one experiences related to their gender identity/expression, through the coupling of focus group methodology and creative writing. Overall, participants described gender euphoria as rooted in affirmation by self, others, places, and the ability to simply exist.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Upon completion, participants will be able to describe what gender euphoria is and how it has been conceptualized in community-based and academic literature.
  2. Upon completion, participants will be able to identify ways to incorporate gender euphoria into social work research, education, and practice.
  3. Upon completion, participants will be able to discuss the importance of highlighting joy and positive aspects of marginalized communities in the classroom and in practice.
