Session: Anti-oppressive Education Practices

Engaging Students as Co-Researchers—Implications for Experiential and Anti-Oppressive Teaching and Pedagogy

This presentation describes one approach to teaching a 15-week introduction to qualitative methods course to doctoral students. Students are brought on as study personnel to gain first-hand experience in data collection and analysis. Engaging students as co-researchers offers an opportunity for experiential learning and supports anti-oppressive teaching practices.

Learning Objectives:

  1. identify benefits and challenges of teaching qualitative research methodology at the doctoral level.
  2. describe how engaging doctoral students as co-researchers can contribute to anti-oppressive teaching by including practices characterized by power-sharing, consensus building, and collective decision making.
  3. describe the National Society for Experiential Education (NSEE) principles for good practices for experiential learning and apply them to the context of teaching qualitative research methodology at the doctoral level.
