Towards a Critical Mindfulness Pedagogical Approach to Social Work Anti-Racist and Anti-Oppressive Education

Preparing social work students to skillfully engage in dialogue and social action is critical. Mindfulness, a basic human capacity, can enhance critical consciousness, a key mechanism for social action. We examined critical mindfulness practices among MSW students engaging in difficult dialogue in a diversity course. Pedagogical implications will be explored.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Upon completion, the participant will be able to: 1) Describe the use of critical mindfulness approaches in the social work classroom to support student engagement and dialogue
  2. Upon completion, the participant will be able to: 2) Prepare educators to better support social work students when learning about distressing material and anti-racist and anti-oppressive approaches
  3. Upon completion, the participant will be able to: 3) Promote utilization of mindfulness techniques to support the health and wellbeing of social work students
