Session: The impact of community- and national-level support on older adults and their families

Comparing Unmet Service Needs of Rural and Urban Dementia Caregivers: A Multi-Site Qualitative Study

Limited research has compared rural-versus-urban dementia caregivers’ service needs. We interviewed 20 rural and 18 urban caregivers and found similar unmet needs. However, their approaches to solving their challenges differed. Utilizing online/virtual support across the nation and culturally tailored services would increase access/use for rural and urban caregivers respectively.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Articulate the similarities and differences of characteristics in rural and urban caregivers of older adults with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD).
  2. Articulate the similarities and differences of unmet service needs in rural and urban caregivers of older adults with ADRD.
  3. Identify factors for home and community-based service use in rural and urban caregivers of older adults with ADRD.
