Session: Supporing the Development of LGBTQ+ Individuals in Academia and in the Community

Mentoring LGBTQ+ Doctoral Students in Research: Lessons Learned About Culturally Responsive Practices

Importance of effective mentorship for the academic success of students cannot be overstated. This presentation elucidates lessons learned on the role of effective mentor-mentee relationship in a doctoral student’s ability to conduct culturally responsive research with underserved LGBTQ+ communities.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Upon completion, the participant will be able to describe three challenges LGBTQ+ students can face when navigating higher education environments with limited access to LGBTQ+ mentors.
  2. Upon completion, the participant will be able to identify three practical skills that social work students can learn in conducting culturally-responsive research with LGBTQ+ populations under the mentorship of an experienced LGBTQ+ researcher.
  3. Upon completion, the participant will be able to explain two mentorship strategies social work educators can use to mentor and support PhD students from underrepresented communities conducting research with marginalized communities.
