A faculty led Puerto Rico study abroad course examines the marginalization of Puerto Rico through deconstructing social, economic and environmental justice issues and the abandonment of local and indigenous ways of knowing. Discussion about daily visits to health and human service programs, and visits to historic indigenous and environmental sites.
Learning Objectives:
1. Describe an approach of integrating Indigenous and local knowledge wisdom that advances post-colonial and anti-racist approaches for teaching and learning.
2. Identify at least one key take-away for their own institutions or social work programs to consider towards using Faculty led study abroad courses to decolonize social work education in international settings.
Describe at least one pedagogical approach for how to prepare students to critically examine how oppressive systems have marginalized Puerto Rican residents on the island.
