Session: Empowering the Next Generation: Testimonios and Male Scholars of Color as Mentors

Opening Closed Doors: Narratives on the Essence of Mentoring by Male Scholars of Color

Location: KC Convention Center, Room 3501A
Results from a qualitative study exploring the mentoring experiences of 10 males of color in academia will be presented. The importance of race in mentorship, why mentorship is fundamental and need to increase representation in higher education and the academy. Rich narratives about family, values, and priorities will be discussed.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Upon completion, participants will be able to recognize and describe their own experiences as a mentor or a mentee and ascribe meaning to that experience.
  2. Upon completion, participants will be able to identify best practices for providing mentorship to early career professionals who identify as scholars of color.
  3. Upon completion, participants will be able to describe why mentorship is fundamental to scholars from communities of color and the importance of increasing representation in higher education and in the academy.
