Social work education is immersed in colonial influences and practices that have caused harm to Indigenous and Tribal Peoples. This is a call to action for social work educators to recognize and confront the colonial process and implement new practices to allow for the expression of the indigenous worldview.
Learning Objectives:
understand how colonial influences and social work practices have caused harm to Indigenous and Tribal Peoples.
understand the importance of teaching a relational approach where social workers must be mindful, respectful, and strive for a deeper understanding of cultural differences and practices to build and maintain good relationships.
learn about trauma-informed practice and how to be actively aware and conscious of how Indigenous and Tribal Peoples have been harmed to promote healing and reduce the risk of re-traumatization.
