Advancing "Legal" Within Eco-Social Work for Indigenous Knowledge Sovereignty and Environmental Justice Advocacy

Putting eco-social work action central to environmental justice, this paper assesses the integration of legal aspects within social work education. Using narrative analysis, the paper underscores existing gaps in legal knowledge and competencies and informs on curricular enhancements to effectively advocate for Indigenous Knowledge Sovereignty and Environmental Justice.

Learning Objectives:

  1. To outline the interconnected nature of environmental justice, social justice, and Indigenous Knowledge Sovereignty within the eco-social work paradigm.
  2. To explore the gaps in legal knowledge and competencies required for eco-social work practitioners to successfully address environmental justice for Indigenous communities.
  3. To inform social work educators and eco-social work practitioners on the legal dimensions required to advocate for environmental justice and honor Indigenous Knowledge Sovereignty.
