Cultivating Cultural Humility: Strategies for Teaching Child Welfare Workers to Address Grief

Presenters focus on anti-racist, Indigenous approaches in social work education. Strategies include fostering racial awareness, multicultural planning, and survival skills against racism. Teaching activities address childhood trauma, grief, and loss, while client activities involve creating memory boxes and writing goodbye letters. Overall, presenters aim to equip educators and future clinicians.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Participants will develop a comprehensive understanding of transracial adoption and foster care by exploring the three key components outlined by Vonk (2001): racial awareness, multicultural planning, and developing survival skills against racism.
  2. Participants will gain practical insights into teaching activities designed to address childhood grief and trauma, with a focus on Indigenous communities, fostering the development of culturally competent social work professionals.
  3. Participants will acquire the skills to implement client-centered activities, such as Loss Boxes and Goodbye Letters, as therapeutic interventions for supporting individuals and families dealing with grief and loss in adoption and foster care settings.
