Session: Best Practices in Clinical Care for Child Welfare-Involved Clinicians and Clients

Perspectives of Mandated Reporters: Implications for Training and Education

The 2024 CSWE APM recognizes “issues about practices, policies, and structures that hinder or advance anti-racist and decolonial approaches to social work education and practice.” With that lens, this study uses interviews from 30 mandated reporters to describe their perceptions of preparation and training for filing reports in the U.S.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Participants will identify ways in which mandated reporters use training from educational institutions to feel prepared for professional work.
  2. After completing the session, participants will be able to identify opportunities for social work agencies and educational institutions to create spaces to discuss mandated reporting.
  3. Participants will be able to identify the ways that knowledge of mandated reporting laws may make reporters more comfortable to reflect on their own biases before filing reports.
