Climate Justice: Gender and Forced Migration From Global Indigenous Lands

This workshop will present an innovative interactive workshop with multiple steps to describe and explain how climate change affects women disproportionately higher, especially in the global south, and how the effects of climate change impact the vulnerability of women when they need to flee their country/region of origin.

Learning Objectives:

  1. 1. Increase knowledge of direct and indirect relationships between climate change, gender, and forced migration which will help social work educators plan and organize environmental justice and international curriculum and course contents. Participants will understand intersectionality among gender, indigenousness, climate change, and migration.
  2. 2. Introduce coordination, strategies, and program details for development of a course about climate change’s impacts on diverse populations, and injustices experienced by globally vulnerable populations. Special attention will be given to specific sub-groups of affected populations such as women with indigenous identity, disability, women with illness, and older women.
  3. 3. Facilitate interactive discussions and exercises with participants by providing scenarios of women fleeing their country of origin, in Africa, South Asia and South America, due to effects of climate change. Participants will understand experiences of injustice and vulnerability the women encounter during migration.
