Minoritized Workers’ Expression of Ideal Care on the Front Lines of Resettlement Work

This paper explores the lived experiences of Black direct service providers with migration experiences who provide humanitarian support within US resettlement institutions. Findings from semi-structured interviews (n=17) highlight how these minorized workers provide essential care labor while confronting organizational and political constraints and exploitation to deliver quality care.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Participants will come away with a cursory understanding of the immigration social service systems and their impact on Black direct service practitioners with migration experiences.
  2. Participants will engage with the experiences of Black newcomer practitioners and their articulation of the innovative solutions they employ to fill institutional gaps.
  3. The researchers will share insights from their findings, which identify how service organizations can support the professional development of newcomer staff by valuing their expertise and offerings as more than just “cultural knowledge” and supporting their broader vision and goals.
