A Research Practicum for Doctoral Students: Implications for Pedagogy, Collaboration, and Dissemination

This paper presents the design and delivery of a two-semester doctoral level research practicum aimed at helping students collaboratively engage in qualitative and quantitative research projects. Conceptualization of the course, including the syllabus, assignments, and group processes, are discussed while highlighting the experiences and reflections of the instructors.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand the conceptualization and implementation of a two-semester doctoral level research practicum aimed at helping students collaboratively engage in qualitative and quantitative research projects.
  2. Understand the pedagogical implications of having students work on different sections (i.e. Literature Review, Methods, Findings, Discussion) of both a qualitative and quantitative project.
  3. Understand the benefits to students of having co-instructors teach the course, which allows for varying viewpoints, opinions, and ways of conducting research and disseminating results.
