Curricular Initiatives for Dementia Education

Dementia education can be an effective pedagogical tool to change student perceptions of dementia and dementia care. In this interactive workshop we will describe and introduce four dementia education initiatives, which implemented in two social work classrooms. Evaluation of these initiatives through survey and focus group indicated positive student outcomes.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Upon completion, the participant will be able to implement curricular initiatives for dementia education in social work classrooms. Specifically, they will gain detailed understanding of (a) dementia simulation, (b) dementia mentor interviews, and (c) patients as teachers, and will be able to utilize these approaches in their own classrooms.
  2. Upon completion, the participant will be able to conduct assessment to gauge the effectiveness of dementia education for student learning outcomes. They will be introduced to surveys, discussion boards, and focus groups that were utilized to measure students' dementia knowledge.
  3. Upon completion, the participant will be able to describe the benefits of dementia education for social work students. The presentation will include the quantitative and qualitative results from the study to evaluate student outcomes after participation in dementia education.
