Navigating Cultural Clashes: The Indigenous Wisdom of Immigrant Black Families in Western Societies

This study examines how Black immigrant families raise their children, highlighting their cultural endurance and resiliency in Western environments. Specifically, how these families adjust to social norms, emphasizing the role social workers have in utilizing the Indigenous wisdom that these families possess—not just as allies but also as co-conspirators.

Learning Objectives:

  1. 1. To understand how Black immigrant families navigate cultural clashes while parenting within Western societies.
  2. 2. To explore social workers' role as allies and co-conspirators in supporting these families, guided by African Indigenous wisdom and practices.
  3. 3. To advocate for social work education that integrates African Indigenous Knowledge as a significant aspect of enhancing better parenting practices within Western societies, while emphasizing cultural sensitivity and allyship.
