Advocating for Equity: Understanding Social Work Licensure and Licensing Exam Impacts on Diverse Students

Introduction: Social work licensure is a critical component of professional practice, ensuring social workers meet standardized competencies to provide quality care (Garcia, 1990). However, the licensure process, particularly the licensing exam, poses distinct challenges and barriers for various groups, including BIPOC students, older students, students with disabilities, and students whose first language is not English (Castex et al., 2018; DeCarlo, 2022; Perron, 2023; Senreich & Dale, 2021). This session aims to illuminate these disparities and equip participants with actionable steps to advocate for more equitable licensure practices at local, state, and national levels.

Understanding Social Work Licensure vs. Licensing Exam: The distinction between social work licensure and the licensing exam is essential yet often misunderstood. Licensure encompasses a broad set of requirements, including education, supervised practice, and ethical standards, which vary by state and level of practice (bachelor’s, master’s, and clinical levels). The licensing exam, a standardized test administered by bodies such as the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB), is just one component of the licensure process.
