Culturally Responsive Interventions for Substance Use Disorder in Indigenous Populations

Despite the growing number of deaths by substance overdose within Indigenous populations, there is little focus on the types of treatments that are most effective and accepted. This workshop discusses the need for interventions and harm reductions that are decolonized, culturally informed, and created with the Indigenous communities and leadership.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Upon completion, the participant will be able to have an understanding of the opioid epidemic and responses from within the Indigenous population.
  2. Upon completion, the participant will be able to state the benefits and processes of creating culturally responsive, trauma-informed, and harm-reduction interventions with the people the service is for.
  3. Upon completion, the participant will have a foundation on which to create social work education that promotes decolonization of substance use interventions, cultivates culturally-informed treatment, and encourages harm reduction practices.
