Session: Navigating the College Experience, While Being Black

Community is Key! Sense of Belonging and Coping Among Black College Women

This phenomenological study explored Black women’s experiences developing a sense of belonging while attending PWI’s, the coping mechanisms they employ, and how their experiences affect their academic success. Study findings suggest that developing culturally appropriate spaces as interventions is key to the academic progress and emotional well-being of Black women.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Upon completion, participants will be able to recognize the historical underpinnings of adverse experience Black women experience while enrolled at predominantly white colleges and universities.
  2. Upon completion, participants will be able to describe the influences of sense of belonging on Black women's academic progress.
  3. Upon completion, participants will be able to identify coping mechanisms used by Black women enrolled in predominantly white colleges and universities.
