Session: Expanding Access to Medication for Opioid Use Disorder

Use of Buprenorphine Among Non-Hospital Residential Programs

This presentation examined the availability of buprenorphine, a lifesaving medication for opioid use disorder (OUD), in non-hospital residential programs. Our findings reveal that buprenorphine was more available to patients in detox and short-term residential settings than those in long-term residential settings, suggesting a gap in care for wanting longer-term services.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand existing research on the use of medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD) in residential programs, as well as the consolidated framework for implementation research (CFIR).
  2. Describe findings from a study using the 2021 National Substance Use and Mental Health Services Survey (N-SUMHSS) investigating the use of buprenorphine among three residential types (detox, short-term, and long-term).
  3. Appraise different factors associated with the use of buprenorphine in different residential settings and the implications this has for social workers.
