Are Social Work Programs Adequately Preparing Students to Assess and Intervene With Suicide?

This presentation describes a survey of program directors (N=151) of social work programs which explored course offerings on suicide at the BSW, MSW, and continuing education level. Implications for social work programs are discussed, identifying next steps for improving the universal coverage of suicide prevention content in social work programs.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Upon completion, the participant will be able to describe the prevalence of courses with substantial suicide content in BSW and MSW programs in the United States
  2. Upon completion, the participant will be able to identify factors that impact whether programs include courses about suicide or with substantial suicide content
  3. Upon completion, the participant will be able to name three actions to increase the suicide content included in social work programs
